The objective of this work was to study the morphology and biometry of the infraorbital foramen (FIO), variations in its shape, size and number as well as to obtain measurements of its location. 60 dry skulls were analyzed. The test of Qui-quadrant and the T Test were used in measurements with a 5% significance. On the right side, the FIO was measured at a distance of 6.49(±1.68) mm from the lower, 39.65(±3) mm from the upper, 17.7(±2.97) mm from the medial and 20.46(±2.9) mm from the lateral margin of the orbit; its pear-shaped opening distance was 13.67(±2.17) mm. On the left side, the distance of the FIO to the lower margin of the orbit was 6.52(±1.82) mm; to the upper margin was 39.9(±2.62) mm and to the lateral and medial margin were 17.93(±2.58) mm... |

Four additional species are included in the genus Hemistephanus: H. villosus (Kieffer) comb. n. and H. colombiensis (Ceballos) comb. n., transferred from Megischus and redescribed, and H. costaricensis sp. n. and H. stenogulatus sp. n., described as new; H. artiosulcatus Aguiar is proposed as a junior synonym of H. villosus Kieffer. The males of H. arctatus, H. colombiensis, H. submaculatus, and H. villosus are described for the first time. Much new or additional morphometric data is incorporated and discussed for these species and for H. carinatus, H. erugatus, H. erythrocephalus, H. limpidipennis, H. orfilanus, H. ruficeps, and H. velutinus. New geographical records are presented for all mentioned species and for H. cylindricus. Errata for publications... |

This study aimed at answering the question whether production of new colour variants of American mink in mink farms using mutations may entail changes in skull morphology and relationships between the bone elements building it. Analyses were made on the skulls of 56 eight-month-old males and females of two American mink colour variants (standard Brown and mutant Sapphire) from the same farm. Mean values, standard deviations and coefficients of variation were determined for carcass weight, cranial and mandibular weights and 7 dorsal surface, 8 lateral surface and 11 basal surface traits of the skull. The values of 24 cranial and mandibular indices and the values of sexual size dimorphism (SSD), i.e. a coefficient describing differences between sexes, were... |

This paper deals about the nematocysts like a source of biometric information for comparison between the species Hydra vulgaris Pallas, 1766, Hydra vulgaris pedunculata Deserti et al., 2011 and Hydra pseudoligactis (Hyman, 1931). This biometric tool lets us carry out statistical comparisons and adding these results to the identification of specimens from different classificatory groups. In this particular study, we obtained significant differences between species, individuals of each species and nematocysts type when compared the biometry of its nematocysts. Another result was the variation in of particular nematocysts, like atrichous isorhiza and holotrichous isorhiza for the species H. vulgaris in relation to the column size. |

Few giant otters (Pteronura brasiliensis) have been measured and weighed and its actual size is controversial in the literature. This study presents the weight-length relationship of Amazonian giant otters using 15 captive individuals. The maximum length and weight were 163cm and 22.5kg, and 162cm and 28.8kg, for the males and females, respectively. The weight-length relationships were not significantly different between the sexes (t = 0.658, d.f.=11, P>0.05) and can be expressed by the equation: W=1.48x10-5 L2.81. Considering that some of the giant otters used in this study were old individuals (more than 10 years old), and that all the animals analyzed were healthy, it is possible to assume that the weight-length relationships obtained are probably a... |

ABSTRACT Brazil is the third largest fruit producer in the world, but many native fruits remain underexploited, as is the case for mangabeira (Hancornia speciosa Gomes). Little is known about general aspects of this species in its naturally occurring environment. Thus, this study aimed to characterize plant and fruit morphologies from native mangabeira selections in the Savannah-Restinga vegetation transition zone. The experiment was carried out in Patizal, Recanto and Recurso villages located in the Morros municipality, Maranhão State, dominated by extensive Savannah-Restinga vegetation transition zone with naturally occurring mangabeiras. Forty five mangabeira trees were randomly chosen from native selections in the three villages. Data collected were... |

Abstract The estimation of pineapple total leaf area by simple, fast and non-destructive methods allow inferences related to carbon fixation estimative, biotic and abiotic damages and correlating positively with yield. The objective was to estimate D leaf area and total leaf area and of ‘Pérola’ pineapple plants from biometric measurements. For this purpose, 125 slips were selected and standardized by weight for planting in pots. Nine months after planting in a greenhouse, the plants were harvested to evaluate the total leaf area of the plant, D leaf area and D leaf length and width using a portable leaf area meter. Pearson correlation analysis was made and it was observed significative positive and strong correlation among the studied variables. Then,... |

Sampling of a population of D. Labrax was one with spear diving catches. Morphometric and meristic data were used to calculate a biometric index. This index showed that all the bass of the Sete area belong to Dicentrarchus labrax, even if they were black spotted on the upper part of the body. Morphology was slightly different according to sex, but sex determination was not always possible using morphometric data. This inshore population shows some morphological characteristics (branchiospine and lateral line scale number) different from the data collected on the same sp along the Maroc Atlantic coast by Gravier, 1961. |

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) is increasingly used in biology and the appearance of imaging and structural and/or metabolic spectroscopy (MRI/MSR) platforms (Rennes, Strasbourg, Marseille...) devoted to this small animal shows the recent keen interest in these research techniques. However, to this day and to our knowledge, no approach of this style has been developed for sea molluscs and even less so for the cup oyster, Crassostrea gigas. Because of its economic importance, this bivalve mollusc is the subject of much research in physiology, to the point of becoming, at IFREMER, a biological model for marine invertebrates. Nonetheless, most of the methodologies developed for studying it are destructive, which (1) prevents individual follow-up, (2)... |
