Biometric and statistical investigations on the cnidoma of the genus Hydra (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Deserti,Maria I.; Zamponi,Mauricio O..
This paper deals about the nematocysts like a source of biometric information for comparison between the species Hydra vulgaris Pallas, 1766, Hydra vulgaris pedunculata Deserti et al., 2011 and Hydra pseudoligactis (Hyman, 1931). This biometric tool lets us carry out statistical comparisons and adding these results to the identification of specimens from different classificatory groups. In this particular study, we obtained significant differences between species, individuals of each species and nematocysts type when compared the biometry of its nematocysts. Another result was the variation in of particular nematocysts, like atrichous isorhiza and holotrichous isorhiza for the species H. vulgaris in relation to the column size.

Saviolo Moreira,Rafael; Alexandre Sgrott,Emerson; Seiji,Fernando; Luiz Smith,Ricardo.
The objective of this paper is to establish, validate and test the reproducibility and accuracy of a digital method to measure linear and angular distances in human hard palate of dry skulls. Digital photographs were made in 10 human adult skulls and measurements were made with the aid of AutoCAD software and with a digital caliper in the same skulls by one observer in a blind fashion to compare both methods. To validate the digital method, measurements was made in 20 skulls by 3 observers. The differences of the measurements were not statistically significant between both method and between the 3 observers. The use of digital cameras followed by image analysis with AutoCAD, a software initially developed for engineering and architecture, revealed to be an...

Biometry of the Skull of Wild and Farm Long-tailed Chinchilla (Chinchilla laniger, Molina, 1782) International Journal of Morphology
Baranowski,Piotr; Wróblewska,Magdalena; Nowak,Piotr; Pezinska,Katarzyna.
This study aimed at presenting the values of 47 metric traits and 20 cranial indices of the skull of 291 mature farm chinchillas and comparing these data with those being determined on 32 chinchilla skull specimens from the Natural History Museum in London. Measurements of the viscerocranium, neurocranium and mandible parameters were taken. No normal distribution of these traits was observed. The values of selected Spearman's rank correlation coefficients were calculated. It was found that most cranial traits of the farm chinchillas showed statistically significantly higher values (P0.01) when compared to those being determined on the skulls of museum specimens. The effect of the farm environment, in which the farm chinchillas had been kept for many...

Body weight-length relationships in giant otters (Pteronura brasiliensis) (Carnivora, Mustelidae) BABT
Rosas,Fernando César Weber; Rocha,Carla Soares da; Mattos,Gália Ely de; Lazzarini,Stella Maris.
Few giant otters (Pteronura brasiliensis) have been measured and weighed and its actual size is controversial in the literature. This study presents the weight-length relationship of Amazonian giant otters using 15 captive individuals. The maximum length and weight were 163cm and 22.5kg, and 162cm and 28.8kg, for the males and females, respectively. The weight-length relationships were not significantly different between the sexes (t = 0.658, d.f.=11, P>0.05) and can be expressed by the equation: W=1.48x10-5 L2.81. Considering that some of the giant otters used in this study were old individuals (more than 10 years old), and that all the animals analyzed were healthy, it is possible to assume that the weight-length relationships obtained are probably a...

Cluster evaluation of Brazilian and Moroccan goat populations using physical measurements R. Bras. Zootec.
Pires,Luanna Chácara; Machado,Théa Mírian Medeiros; Araújo,Adriana Mello de; Silva,João Batista Lopes da; Euclydes,Ricardo Frederico; Costa,Márcio da Silva; Olson,Timothy Aanen.
The aim of this study was to compare the genetic diversity of 12 populations of goats in Brazil and Morocco (n = 796) through the use of physical measurements and different multivariate techniques. Traits measured included wither height (WH), distance from the brisket to the ground (BH) and ear length (EL). The standardized Euclidean distance (D) was adopted. The D values were submitted to clustering analysis using hierarchical methods (from nearest neighbor and UPGMA - Unweighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Mean) and the numbers of clusters were analyzed using the Tocher optimization method. The population clustering was different depending on the method of analysis used. Among the hierarchical methods, UPGMA showed the best fit (CCC = 0.82). The...

Do the structures of macaw palm fruit protect seeds in a fire-prone environment? Acta Botanica
Bicalho,Elisa Monteze; Rosa,Bruno Luan; Souza,Anna Elisa de; Rios,Camilla Oliveira; Pereira,Eduardo Gusmão.
ABSTRACT Fire is an abiotic disturbance that regulates vegetation structure and biodiversity. Some plant species have adapted to fire prone environments by evolving protective structures. Acrocomia aculeata (macaw palm) is widely distributed throughout tropical America, and is found in environments continuously influenced by anthropogenic fire. We aimed to determine whether the fruit characteristics of A. aculeata enable seeds to resist the effects of fire and also the consequent effects of fire on fruit biometric traits and embryo viability. After a fire event in a region of pasture-forest transition, we marked 30 individuals of A. aculeata. The trees were separated by UPGMA analysis into 5 groups according to fire exposure, ranging from trees with no...

Donnees preliminaires sur les caracteres biometriques des anchois Engraulis encrasicolus (Linne, 1758) des cotes de Tunisie et du Lac Ichkeul ArchiMer
Quignard, J.p; Hamdouni, T; Zaouali, J.
Researchers have studied the number of rays in the dorsal and anal fins, the number of branchiospines and of vertebrae of the anchovies of the Tunisian coast. Regarding the number of vertebrae, the anchovies of the North West belong to the 'West Mediterranean' group and those of the North East and South East to the 'East Mediterranean' group, according to Fage's classification. The anchovies found in Lake Ishkeul are well individualised morphologically and biologically speaking and could be classified in the large group of the anchovies living in Mediterranean brackish waters; the number of their vertebrae is slightly inferior to that of the groups living in the neighbouring sea waters.

Barnabe, Gilbert.
Sampling of a population of D. Labrax was one with spear diving catches. Morphometric and meristic data were used to calculate a biometric index. This index showed that all the bass of the Sete area belong to Dicentrarchus labrax, even if they were black spotted on the upper part of the body. Morphology was slightly different according to sex, but sex determination was not always possible using morphometric data. This inshore population shows some morphological characteristics (branchiospine and lateral line scale number) different from the data collected on the same sp along the Maroc Atlantic coast by Gravier, 1961.

Évaluation des potentialités de l'IRM pour la recherche sur la Physiologie des Bivalves Premiers résultats anatomiques et perspectives ArchiMer
Pouvreau, Stephane; Davenel, A; Quellec, S; Rambeau, M.
Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) is increasingly used in biology and the appearance of imaging and structural and/or metabolic spectroscopy (MRI/MSR) platforms (Rennes, Strasbourg, Marseille...) devoted to this small animal shows the recent keen interest in these research techniques. However, to this day and to our knowledge, no approach of this style has been developed for sea molluscs and even less so for the cup oyster, Crassostrea gigas. Because of its economic importance, this bivalve mollusc is the subject of much research in physiology, to the point of becoming, at IFREMER, a biological model for marine invertebrates. Nonetheless, most of the methodologies developed for studying it are destructive, which (1) prevents individual follow-up, (2)...
